Party Recap
Emily had a fun afternoon - so the party was a success. Dan and I didn't have a lot of time to take pictures during activities, but we did get a few. It was a small group of kids, but I think a good size for her age.
Inspired by this, Dan blew up 72 balloons the night before the party and created a "rainbow" in our front room. Emily had some big eyes when she woke up Sunday morning and saw it hanging from the ceiling!
She was very excited to open presents (as I'm sure most 4 year olds are) and was particularly gleeful when she opened the "peeing doll that I've always wanted!" (Thanks Aunt Deborah & Uncle Josh.)
The crayon art was set-up in the kitchen with black plastic bags protecting our cabinets and floor from dripping wax. We were pleased to see that the crayons started melting quickly - especially with high heat from the blow dryer. We found it was best to use high heat for the initial melt and then switch to a medium setting as the wax dripped.
We didn't wind up having small canvases for each child since we only have one blow dryer, but they each helped with the large canvas. It does get a little warm, but they all thought it was neat.
And then there was the cake. I wound up decorating the outside with M&Ms around the edge and a large candle in the middle. Emily seemed pleased with those efforts and managed to blow out the candle all by herself. I think she had been a little worried about it ahead of time. (I'll update this post later with some tips for baking and frosting.)
You never know what you'll get with a layer cake until you make the first cut. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if the whole thing crumbled into a heap. BUT lucky for us, it held together and definitely looked like a rainbow of color.
Despite all my best efforts, the layers were not even, the frosting was not even, and it was not perfect by any means, but it turned out better than I had hoped it would, thanks in large part to Dan's efforts in the frosting department (I'll post some tips later). So, now we have a 4 year old and a month to go before the next birthday party ... but first, onto Thanksgiving!

You and Dan made a heroic effort and succeeded in providing a wonderful memory for Emily. Kids don't care a fig about the symmetry of the layers. The effort to show your love is truly what counts, and you did that to the max. Sure wish we lived closer so that we could have been there of all the excitement.
Looks like she had a great party!! I love the balloons and the cake!! Good job Keener parents for giving Emily a great 4th birthday!!
Thrilled that the doll was a hit!
I have to say that Emily's little friend has the sweetest expression on her face in these pictures. She looks delighted to be included in the festivities. What a nice friend for Emily.
